United Nations (UN) representatives in Montenegro have offered assistance to Cetinje in improving social and institutional capacities, the Royal Capital announced.

UN Resident Coordinator in Montenegro Diego Sorilja, UNDP Resident Representative Ekaterina Paniklova, UNESCO Program Coordinator Milica Nikolić, and UNICEF Head of Mission Mikele Servadei visited Cetinje today on the occasion of the tragedy that occurred on January 1st.

As stated, representatives of the UN delegation met with the Mayor of the Royal Capital, Nikola Đurašković, to discuss the consequences of the tragedy, the importance of providing support to vulnerable citizens, and the possibilities for future cooperation.

“The UN delegation expressed solidarity with the citizens of Cetinje and offered assistance in improving social and institutional capacities,” the statement said.

The Royal Capital said that during the talks, special attention was paid to the topics of mental health protection, providing support to the most vulnerable categories of the population, as well as promoting peace and tolerance.

As announced, UN representatives spoke about social cohesion and youth support programs and emphasized the importance of joint action at the local and international levels to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Đurašković thanked the UN representatives for their visit and the support they showed.

He emphasized that cooperation with international organizations is important in strengthening social cohesion and improving the quality of life of the citizens of Cetinje.

“The tragedy that has befallen us requires a joint effort from all of us – local government, state institutions and international partners. The UN has once again shown its willingness to stand by us in the most difficult moments,” said Đurašković.
