“Crime in Štrpci: A Stark Reminder of the Dangers of Hatred and Division”

The tragedy in Štrpci serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating impacts of hatred, intolerance, and division, stated Mirsad Nurković, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

“Today, we solemnly honor the innocent victims of the horrific events in Štrpci, a moment in history that remains etched in the collective memory of our region’s peoples. It has been 32 years since innocent civilians were taken from a death train and violently murdered, their only ‘crime’ being their religion and nationality. This atrocity underscores the dreadful outcomes of hatred, intolerance, and division. It is our responsibility to cultivate a culture of remembrance, ensuring that truth becomes a lasting tribute to the victims, and that justice guides us towards creating a fairer and more humane society,” he remarked.

He emphasized that “forgetting and silence are partners to crime.”

“We must ensure that their sacrifice is not forgotten, nor can we allow a death train to ever traverse our tracks again. We pledge to uphold the values of coexistence, mutual respect, and peace. Let this day remind us that forgetfulness and silence are partners to crime, while memory serves as a bridge to a better and safer future. This incident has taught us that not all trains make the same stops. Tragically, the innocent victims disembarked at a station where no one typically alighted, and on this occasion, the train of death stopped to leave others at the station where their lives were taken by criminals,” the statement concluded.
