The newly upgraded surgery and infectious diseases departments, which received an investment of over half a million euros, were inaugurated today at the Bijelo Polje General Hospital.

Health Minister Vojislav Šimun expressed that the remodeled wards signify a major advancement in enhancing healthcare for the citizens of Bijelo Polje and the surrounding northern region, with backing from the Ministry of Health and the Health Insurance Fund.

“The launch of these departments clearly shows that the Bijelo Polje General Hospital stands as a robust example of effective management and the committed efforts of all its staff. Approximately 3 million euros have been invested in this facility recently. Beyond the partial renovations and adaptations, modern medical equipment has been acquired, and upgrades in staff capabilities have taken place, alongside the introduction of new diagnostic and surgical methods. The surgery department witnessed a 15 percent increase in hospitalized patients last year compared to 2023, highlighting the growth of this institution into a modern medical center,” stated Šimun, while also announcing further investments in medical equipment and personnel.

The Minister revealed that after multiple renovations, alongside the early reopening of the pediatrics department and the establishment of a modern laboratory at Bijelo Polje hospital, there are plans to reconstruct the roof structure with an investment of 750 thousand euros. Additionally, preparations are underway for the renovation of the maternity ward and three operating rooms with a total budget of 1.4 million euros, and efforts are being made to establish an oncology day hospital, a development that has been previously highlighted, particularly since the oncology council is successfully operational here.

According to Dr. Kenan Erović, Director of the Bijelo Polje General Hospital, the remodeled wards will enhance patient treatment conditions, facilitate the performance of the latest surgical procedures, and ensure that patients in the recovery phase have all the necessary amenities for recuperation.

“Over the past year, we conducted 1,000 operations at the Bijelo Polje Hospital, along with 537 specialist examinations in outpatient clinics and services,” said Erović, adding that the renovated facilities and improved environment will enable better service delivery and increased capacity, all focused on patient care.

Erović mentioned that approximately 300,000 euros were allocated for the adaptation and procurement of medical equipment for the surgery department, and about 220,000 euros for the infectious diseases department. Additionally, a new parking area within the hospital complex, costing 95,000 euros, was paved with support from the local government.
