After 14 matches in the Euroleague, Virtus managed only two victories, prompting the Bologna club’s management to part ways with coach Luka Banki and bring in Montenegrin specialist Duško Ivanovic.
Since Ivanovic took over, the team’s performance has dramatically improved—Virtus secured five wins in eight games played under his leadership in the Euroleague.
The latest victory came last night in Munich, where they triumphed over Bayern Munich with a commanding score of 82:22 in the 72nd round of the Euroleague. With this win, Virtus now stands at 7-15, positioned in 16th place in the league standings.
“This win is crucial for our morale. We aim to improve with each game. Aside from the initial few minutes, our defense was solid, and we showed patience on offense. It was a truly complete performance. Bayern is a strong team with many excellent scorers, but we maintained our concentration and composure to secure the win,” Ivanovic remarked following the match.
Virtus benefited from a stellar performance by Toko Shengelia, who contributed 20 points, six rebounds, and one assist, achieving a utility index of 30. This marked his most impressive outing since returning from injury post the 13th round.
Last night, Shengelia played only his third Euroleague match under Ivanovic, yet he reaffirmed his status as the team leader.
“Honestly, it was challenging against Bayern. I had just one training session with the team before the game. It was tough, but I want to extend my gratitude to the coaching staff and my teammates for their trust. I’m doing my best,” Shengelia stated.
In the upcoming round, Virtus will host Monaco.
