“I’m Not Retiring: Zizou is the Obvious Choice as My Successor”
Another World Cup is on the horizon, and this will mark the end of Didier Deschamps’ tenure as the head coach of France.
The esteemed football icon announced his decision to step away from the “tricolor” bench following the World Cup, but he firmly dismissed any notions that this would signify his retirement from coaching.
“No, no, I’m not retiring; I’m simply closing a remarkable chapter in my life and career,” Deschamps stated.
When questioned if he had received any offers, he responded:
“I currently do not have any offers since I’m focused on my job. I am fully committed to France, and I will consider other opportunities after next summer. Until then, my sole priority is France,” Deschamps clarified.
Deschamps has been leading the French national team since 2012.
Under his guidance, the team became world champions and reached the finals as runners-up (2018 and 2022 respectively), faced Portugal in the Euro final in 2016, and clinched the Nations League title.
While it might have been better, arguably, given his management of one of the world’s top teams over the years, no one can dispute the significant achievements he’s accumulated.
“We haven’t had our final say yet,” Deschamps emphasized.
He also reflected on Kylian Mbappé’s recent struggles; the Real Madrid star had gone through a tough period from September until the year’s end due to off-field issues, but he has now returned to form.
“Kylian is playing at his best now and will be a tremendous asset for us in March. Will he be the captain? There’s no reason he shouldn’t be; he’s a true leader who has handled that responsibility exceptionally well since Hugo Lloris’ retirement,” Deschamps added.
As for Deschamps’ successor, the French public has long favoured one name: Zinedine Zidane.
“Zidane would undoubtedly be a fitting choice. I view him as my natural successor, someone who commands everyone’s support and is anticipated for this role. However, the decision rests with Zinedine Zidane and the French Football Federation,” Deschamps concluded.
