Enhancing Montenegro’s Air Connectivity: The Significance of a New Route between Tivat and Barcelona

The airline linking Tivat and Barcelona is set to commence operations on July 1, announced Roko Tolić, the executive director of Airports of Montenegro (ACG).

During a press conference, Tolić emphasized the significance of this new route, highlighting its importance for enhancing Montenegro’s air connections and positioning the nation as a rapidly developing tourist destination.

“The introduction of this line is the result of collaborative efforts and the combined strength of all stakeholders involved,” noted Tolić.

He mentioned that while Vueling is recognized as a low-cost airline, it will offer passengers from Montenegro access to destinations worldwide.

Jorge Urbiola Lopez de Montenegro, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Spanish Embassy in Podgorica, expressed his satisfaction in announcing the direct flights between Tivat and Barcelona, signifying a connection between the two nations.

“From an institutional standpoint, the establishment of a direct flight is essential; however, its significance extends beyond this issue, particularly from a commercial angle,” Lopez de Montenegro stated.

He indicated that this route will greatly enhance business activities, not only in tourism but also in investment, especially with Montenegro poised for EU membership.

“We are optimistic that this route will attract more Spanish investors to Montenegro’s tourism sector,” Lopez added.

Tolić reflected on the challenges Tivat Airport has faced due to the geopolitical landscape, which led to the loss of major markets such as Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. However, he is optimistic that the airport will surpass its record traffic from 2019, albeit with a different structure.

When inquired about potential new destinations before the tourist season begins, Tolić revealed that the national airline has announced routes to Prague and Baku.

“Nevertheless, our focus has been on existing partners and destinations while expanding capacity and increasing flight frequencies,” Tolić explained, noting that Wizz Air will be increasing its rotations.

He acknowledged that current operations exceed Tivat Airport’s existing comfort capacities, while maintaining safety standards.

Regarding airport concessions and the possibility of a referendum, Tolić remarked that it would be premature to comment until they review the offers.

“Every day, my team and I aim to demonstrate that we possess the expertise, knowledge, and capabilities to manage this effectively and enhance our operations in the years to come. However, we must remain open to any substantial offers that may surface,” Tolić asserted.

He emphasized that airports are considered “family jewels, and family jewels are not for sale.”

“Ultimately, they are temporarily borrowed, and should return even more valuable and polished than when we lent them out,” Tolić concluded.
