I Want the Girls to Showcase Their “Golden Lioness” Spirit.

The first practice brought unfortunate news – as soon as the women’s handball national team convened for the European Championship preparations, Jelena Radivojević was unable to participate.
According to coach Suzana Lazović, the Budućnost defender has withdrawn for personal reasons:
“The latest information is that Jelena cannot assist us due to family issues. I won’t go into specifics, as there are significant matters at play. I was counting on her, but it is what it is,” stated the coach.
In her place, pivot player Nikolina Vukčević has been called up.
“I have already brought Nikolina in as her replacement. I believe she can step in effectively both in defense and attack, as I think pivot players can assume a significant role in this team,” added Lazović.
Montenegro is at a fresh start…
“This is our third gathering, and I think we can address everything we need. We’ve monitored the players’ performances in their clubs, and I believe that through training and preparatory matches, we will align our objectives and be ready for the European Championship.”
The Euro Championship kicks off on November 28, with the first competitor being Serbia, followed by Romania and the Czech Republic in the group.
“We will prepare for the match against Serbia, then focus on Romania. We are aware of the challenges within our group; Montenegro has experience facing all three teams, and it’s certainly a demanding task. However, I have faith in these girls – in their courage, unity, and teamwork, which have always propelled us and will guide us to greater achievements. We will take it match by match – we don’t want to make promises; we just want the players to give their all and demonstrate that they are ‘golden lionesses.’ If they do that, I’m confident that favorable results will follow,” said Suzana.
Defense is expected to be the hallmark of this team, as it has been in the past.
“With Dragan Adžić’s departure, many changes have occurred within the team’s defensive strategy. The players are competing in different clubs and leagues with varying coaching styles, but I’m certain they remember what we used to do. We will work diligently to restore that familiarity and stimulate what previously yielded results for Montenegro. That is my coaching philosophy – defense will be our cornerstone.”
Will the roles in the defense adjust without Jelena Radivojević?
“Every absence is impactful, but we possess players capable of compensating for it. We have numerous defenders, including Milena Raičević, and everyone in those positions is versatile and not limited to a singular role. We trust that each player will step up to cover for Jelena’s absence.”
Suzana Lazović has recently taken over as head coach from Bojana Popović.
“I am both happy and excited to have this opportunity. It’s my chance to impart everything I learned and to share the energy and fighting spirit I possessed. I have confidence in my system, my staff, and the players. There’s always pressure following a golden year like 2012; every coach aims to replicate that success. This is a demanding role, and I will do everything possible to steer the national team back onto that path. For certain aspects, patience and faith in our process are essential,” concluded Lazović.
