Prime Minister Spajić Holds Meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella

Mattarella: Montenegro’s Development is Encouraging for the Region and Even More So for Europe

Montenegro has reached its full potential, which is encouraging news for both the region and Europe as a whole. I want to assure you that the Italian Republic is steadfast in its support for Montenegro on its European journey, stated President of Italy Sergio Mattarella during his official visit to Montenegro, where he met with Prime Minister Milojko Spajić.

Prime Minister Spajić briefed President Mattarella on the Government’s ongoing reform initiatives aimed at fulfilling the criteria necessary for EU membership. In this context, Spajić stressed the importance of bilateral support from EU member states and highlighted the prospects for enhancing collaboration with Italy in crucial sectors such as energy, infrastructure, tourism, and transportation.

Advancement toward EU membership is intrinsically linked to an unwavering commitment to combating organized crime and corruption. In this regard, our partnership with Italy’s Guardia di Finanza is essential for the establishment of Montenegro’s new Financial Police. We are implementing best practices as we aspire to create a system that upholds the rule of law for every citizen, Spajić remarked.

President Mattarella reaffirmed Italy’s steadfast support for Montenegro, praising the Government’s initiatives to expedite its European agenda. He noted that Montenegro’s advancements under the 44th Government serve as inspiration for the entire Western Balkans and as a boost for the EU’s enlargement strategy.

It is gratifying to witness your accomplishments, Prime Minister. Montenegro exemplifies how a nation’s success is not measured by its size but by its vibrancy. Montenegro is now at full strength, which is excellent news for both the region and Europe, President Mattarella stated.

The two leaders shared perspectives on the hurdles to European integration, agreeing that this is a pivotal moment for all societal players to concentrate on the future and the available opportunities, in which, as they noted, everyone can find their interests aligned.

During the meeting, it was confirmed that Prime Minister Spajić’s forthcoming visit to Italy, set for 15 April 2025, will serve as a valuable opportunity to enhance economic collaboration, given the substantial potential for further engagement. Both parties concurred that this visit will create a platform for discussions on tangible projects aimed at further connecting the two nations.
