Recently, the Montenegrin-Japanese Promenade was inaugurated in the hinterland of the “Tropikana” beach in Ulcinj, as part of the Capacity Building Project for Disaster Risk Reduction, which includes the Montenegrin Forest Fire Information System (MEFFIS) and Nature-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR).

The stunning promenade, meandering through a lush pine forest, was inaugurated by the Director General of the Directorate for Protection and Rescue, Miodrag Bešović, along with Judah Morricavah, the head of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) project in Montenegro.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that the project’s goal is to enhance the capabilities of state institutions in preventing and mitigating forest fires and other natural disasters through the establishment of MEFFIS and Eco-DRR. Additionally, the promenade symbolizes another achievement of the collaboration between the governments of Japan and Montenegro, specifically through JICA and the Directorate for Protection and Rescue of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

“Montenegro acknowledges Ulcinj as a promising tourist destination and has expressed the necessity for a coordinated strategy to safeguard its coastal ecosystems, advocating for the principles of nature-based disaster risk reduction (Eco-DRR). This aims to bolster disaster resilience and support the tourism sector. Consequently, Ulcinj has been chosen as a pilot municipality for the implementation of a management system based on Eco-DRR principles, leading to a series of Eco-DRR initiatives launched in Ulcinj in recent years in collaboration with JICA,” the Ministry of Interior mentioned in a statement.
