The President of the Social Democrats of Montenegro (SD) and a prominent member of the European Alliance, Damir Šehović, is currently in Washington, where he participated in the 73rd National Prayer Breakfast.

According to the SD’s announcement, Šehović also engaged in discussions at the Inter-Parliamentary Security Forum hosted within the US Congress.

This forum, themed “Countering the Malign Activities of China, Russia, and Iran,” was led by Congressmen Pete Sessions and Robert Aderholt. Alongside Šehović, attendees included Nikola Rakočević and Nermin Abdić from the Democratic Party of Socialists, as well as independent deputy Jevrosima Pejović.

During his time in Washington, Šehović mentioned in multiple meetings with forum participants and additional gatherings prior to the Prayer Breakfast that Russia is not only maintaining but strengthening its influence in Montenegro despite geopolitical shifts. He pointed out that Moscow is leveraging certain political elements within the current government as proxies to foster political instability, escalate interethnic tensions, obstruct institutional operations, and undermine the democratic progress of the nation. He warned that these developments pose threats not only to Montenegro but also to the regional stability as a whole, as stated by the SD.

Šehović further highlighted that Montenegro, as a NATO member, carries both a responsibility and an obligation to tackle these threats head-on, aided by strategic allies like the USA. He emphasized that this is the sole method to uphold the pro-European and pro-NATO values that are increasingly under siege from malign influences stemming from so-called third parties.
