GDP per Capita: Montenegro at 51% of the European Average, Serbia at 49%

As per Eurostat’s final data, the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in Montenegro, measured by the purchasing power standard, is equivalent to 51 percent of the EU average.

The Montenegrin Institute for Monstat’s Statistical Office has reported that among EU member states, Luxembourg boasts the highest GDP per capita according to the purchasing power standard, surpassing the EU average by more than double at 237 percent.

Bulgaria holds the lowest position with a GDP per capita of 64 percent of the EU average, according to the agency’s report.

In the regional context, Croatia has the highest GDP per capita based on purchasing power, standing at 76 percent of the EU average, while Montenegro follows in second place at 51 percent of the EU average. Serbia is at 49 percent of the European average, Northern Macedonia at 41 percent, and both Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania are at 36 percent of the European average.

The actual individual consumption (SIP) per capita, based on purchasing power, ranged from 70 percent of the EU average in Bulgaria and Hungary to 136 percent of the EU average in Luxembourg, as per the final data.

While GDP per capita primarily serves as an indicator of economic activity levels, actual individual consumption acts as an alternative measure, better suited to reflect household material well-being.
