The Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) reported that 13 individuals were detained overnight due to roadblock violations.

According to their statement, “No major incidents occurred during the unregistered public gatherings and road blockades last night,” and the police “conducted identity checks on 386 individuals.”

The police urged citizens to avoid any unlawful activities and refrain from blocking traffic in a manner that could jeopardize their safety and that of other road users.

Protest blockades in Serbia, which include demands for early elections, have been taking place for a week now.

As reported by TV N1, traffic blockades continued in Zemun on July 6th.

The previous day, Boris Pendelj, a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, was detained during a blockade after police dispersed one of the gatherings in the broader city center.

He was subsequently released after a hearing at the Misdemeanor Court and faces charges for illegally pushing a container into the street.

The wave of protest blockades across cities in Serbia began following a student call for “civil disobedience” after a protest held in Belgrade on June 28th.

Demands include the calling of early elections, the removal of a camp in the city center where opposition members have been residing for months, and the release of students detained during the June 28 protests.

These mass protests and blockades at various universities across Serbia emerged after the tragic collapse of the Novi Sad Railway Station canopy on November 1, 2024, which resulted in 16 fatalities. The protests demand accountability from authorities regarding the incident.
