Former Philadelphia basketball player Lonnie Walker is joining Maccabi Tel Aviv, as announced by the Israeli club today.
Walker (26) has signed a three-year contract with Maccabi.
“We are thrilled to welcome Lonnie Walker to our family. Acquiring a talent of his caliber in Tel Aviv, a player with experience in the American Professional Basketball League (NBA), sends a strong and clear message about our ambition to compete at the highest level and entertain our fans. Lonnie’s arrival is not just a single move but a perfect addition to the broader vision and strategy we are cultivating,” said Maccabi General Manager Claudio Caldebela.
The American guard previously played for Zalgiris last season, where he averaged 13.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in the Euroleague.
After playing a total of 19 EuroLeague matches for the Lithuanian club, he moved to Philadelphia in February, where he averaged 12.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game.
San Antonio selected him with the 18th pick in the 2018 NBA draft, after which he also played for the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn.
“We are constructing a team with a distinct identity, built on talent, character, and ambition. The resilience Lonnie has displayed throughout his career aligns perfectly with the work ethic and determination that are the foundations of our yellow-blue organization. His relentless pursuit of self-improvement and contributing to the team is truly commendable,” added Caldebela.
Maccabi coach Oded Katash noted that Walker’s NBA experience, along with his familiarity with European basketball, will be a significant asset for the team.
“Loni is an outstanding player with remarkable talent. The experience he gained in the NBA and his understanding of European basketball and the Euroleague will greatly benefit us. He is a competitive player with a strong desire to succeed, and I am confident he will quickly integrate into our culture and lead us to victory,” said Katash.
