The Young “Sharks” Face Rivals in Their Quest for the World Medal Defense
The Montenegro U20 water polo team has been drawn into Group A for the upcoming world championship, competing alongside Spain, Italy, and Croatia.
Group B will feature Greece, Serbia, the USA, and Hungary.
This championship, taking place from June 10 to 17 in Bucharest and Otopeni, will introduce a new tournament format.
The top eight teams from the last championship have been placed in Division 1, divided into groups A and B, while the remaining teams fall into Division 2, which consists of four groups of three.
Group C includes Canada, Japan, and South Africa; Group D consists of Brazil, China, and Kazakhstan; Group E is made up of New Zealand, Peru, and Romania; and Group F has Iran, Australia, and Argentina.
The top two teams from groups A and B will secure spots in the quarterfinals, while the third- and fourth-placed teams from those groups, along with the winners from groups C, D, E, and F, will compete in playoffs to reach the top eight.
At the previous U20 World Championship in Prague in 2021, the Montenegrin squad clinched the bronze medal by defeating Hungary in the third-place match.
Serbia took home the gold, while Italy earned the silver.
