Montenegro and Spain have elevated their political dialogue to unprecedented levels with the meeting between Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović and Spanish King Felipe VI, as announced by the President’s Office.

This historic meeting marks the first bilateral discussion between a Spanish monarch and a Montenegrin official.

“I engaged in a very meaningful conversation with King Felipe VI, and today we have initiated a new chapter in the relations between Montenegro and Spain,” Milatović stated.

He expressed gratitude to King Felipe for the robust support that Montenegro enjoys from Spain in its European aspirations, while informing him of Montenegro’s goal to join the European Union by 2028.

Milatović also noted that the conversation focused on enhancing cooperation between Montenegro and Spain.

“Through today’s meeting, we have elevated our political dialogue to the highest level,” he remarked.

He added that discussions included the significance of economic cooperation, Spanish investments, and opportunities for bolstering collaboration between their business communities.

“We agreed that establishing a business forum in the near future would be a positive step,” Milatović said.

According to the statement, Milatović invited the Spanish King to visit Montenegro, expressing hope that this visit will occur soon.

“We also talked about launching a Spanish cultural center in Montenegro, particularly the Cervantes Institute, and I sought the King’s support on this matter as well,” Milatović noted.

He emphasized the importance of opening a Spanish embassy in Podgorica while recalling that Montenegro established its embassy in Madrid in 2017.

“We concurred that the opening of the Spanish embassy in Podgorica would be a significant advancement in our bilateral relations,” Milatović concluded.
