Our Community Mourns the Loss of a Dedicated and Faithful Colleague

Dejan Adžić, a former international water polo referee and long-serving general secretary of the Water Polo and Swimming Association of Montenegro, passed away today following a brief illness, as announced by VPSCG.

In recent years, Adžić served as the water polo commissioner for VPSCG.

The VPSCG statement, signed by president Đuro Marić, noted, “Dejan was a highly respected water polo player, international referee, general secretary, and water polo commissioner.” It continued, “With the untimely passing of our member, the water polo and swimming community has lost a loyal and dedicated official and colleague, who will be remembered for a long time.”

Adžić progressed through all the junior selections of his home club Primorje, and he also represented the youth teams of the former Yugoslavia. He played for notable clubs, including Crvena Zvezda and Budva.

According to VPSCG, “His passion for water polo was evident post-playing career as he transitioned into officiating, quickly establishing himself as a noteworthy international referee. Adžić officiated at several key water polo events, including the European Championship in 2006, various matches and tournaments of the World League, and both world and European championships for youth categories. He notably presided over the first official water polo match of the Montenegrin national team against Italy, held in Trieste on December 19, 2006.”

Following his refereeing career, Adžić became a delegate and controller for water polo matches, and since February 2018, he has been the commissioner for water polo competitions in VPSCG.

A commemorative session will be held by the Water Polo and Swimming Association of Montenegro and the Municipality of Kotor on Friday at 11 a.m. in the Palace of Byzantium (Municipal Assembly hall) in the Old Town of Kotor.
