A Commemoration Honoring the Late Water Polo Referee Dejan Adžić
Today, a commemorative session was held at the Byzanti Palace in the Old Town of Kotor, organized by the Water Polo Swimming Association of Montenegro and the Municipality of Kotor, to honor the late Dejan Adžić, the commissioner for water polo competitions.
Alongside his family, members of the Association, and officials from the Municipality of Kotor, numerous athletes, sports workers, and friends gathered to bid farewell to Dejan. VPSCG President Đuro Marić addressed the attendees.
“Dejan was not only part of his family but also belonged to another family—the water polo family. He started forming friendships with water polo at the pool in Kotor as a young boy, progressed through the ranks of his mother club Primorac, and represented the youth teams of the former Yugoslavia. He played for Crvena Zvezda and Budva,” shared Marić.
“After retiring as a player, he nurtured his passion for water polo by becoming a referee, quickly establishing himself among international officials,” Marić continued.
“He officiated many significant competitions, including the European Championship in 2006, World League matches, and various youth World and European Championships, in addition to numerous club tournaments.”
“Following his refereeing career, he transitioned into roles as a delegate and controller. For many years, he served as the general secretary of the Water Polo and Swimming Association, and since 2018, he has held the position of commissioner for water polo competitions within our organization.
The untimely passing of our dear Dej marks a significant loss for the water polo and swimming community; we have lost a dedicated official and colleague. Everything he contributed to the Association was done with great passion, and he will forever remain in our hearts and minds.”
“We have lost a cheerful, witty, and candid individual who always took time for others, often sacrificing his own needs. He faced life bravely, never shying away from a challenge, believing he always gave his best,” Marić reflected.
Dejan sincerely devoted himself until the very end, and we are immensely grateful for the collaboration and camaraderie we shared. Although a void remains, we can fill it with cherished memories, even though no one can truly replace him. Many reminders of Dejan will bring us back to the joyful moments spent in his company.
“Rest in peace, dear Dejan. To your family, I extend my heartfelt condolences once again,” concluded Marić.
