Montenegro: 19 Police Officers Suspended Amid Ongoing Investigations into Others – Latest News

The police work has identified safety interference in 44 officers, and for 38, investigations are still ongoing, as reported by News.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the head of that department confirmed that 19 employees were suspended due to identified security interference and that other disciplinary actions will commence shortly.

“The Ministry of Interior has made it a primary objective to ensure the complete functionality of control mechanisms at every level. Given the challenges posed by the release of two former police directors, two former assistant directors, and numerous police officers charged with various offenses, maintaining the full integrity of this institution and achieving the absolute decriminalization of the police force remains a priority. Accordingly, the security interference commission within the Ministry of Internal Affairs has found security interference with 44 police officers. Further evaluations have been ordered for 38 additional personnel, and those checks are currently in progress,” stated the MUP.

The initiative to suspend 19 police officers was initiated solely based on the existence of security interference, as explained by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Danilo Šaranović:

“Disciplinary proceedings for other staff members who did not receive suspensions are expected to commence in the upcoming days. There are fewer officers under scrutiny or detained within UIX, during which legal mechanisms cannot be applied,” MUP officials mentioned.

This governmental department clarified that security interference related to further work, as detailed in Article 162 of the Law, includes individuals associated with drug trafficking, information collection concerning secrets and terrorists, saboteurs, members of organized crime groups, or individuals suspected of such affiliations.

“We are committed to combatting corruption and crime within our ranks as it is a legal, professional, and moral obligation towards all citizens and those police officers who carry out their duties honorably, professionally, and in accordance with the law,” stated representatives from the MUP.
