Luka Dončić had just two training sessions with the Slovenian national team ahead of their friendly match against Germany. On Thursday, he spoke to the media for the first time since joining the national team this summer.

Discussing various topics, Dončić didn’t hold back in expressing his views on Olimpia Milan for not permitting the Slovenian national team to compete in EuroBasket this summer.

Vlatko Čančar and Josh Nibo were mentioned as players who weren’t at their best but could have contributed to the national team.

“I have no complaints. It’s the clubs’ choice. The Lakers allowed me to play, but Olimpija isn’t under their jurisdiction. I’d prefer not to delve into that, but ultimately, it should be the player’s decision,” Dončić remarked.

He also shared insights about his current condition, noting his weight loss and readiness for EuroBasket.

“What motivated me? We devised a different plan this time since I had more time to reflect. Last year was very difficult. I was with my club until June and then joined the national team, which drained me. This year, I had more time to focus on my fitness,” said Dončić, who surprised many by transitioning from Dallas to the Lakers.

Dončić’s comments about Čančar and Nibo prompted a response from the City of Fashion — general manager Christos Stavropoulos clarified the club’s position.

“In light of certain media discussions, I want to emphasize on behalf of the club that our players’ health has always been and will continue to be our top priority. Specifically, regarding Čančar and Nib, both are recuperating from serious injuries that significantly impacted their playing time last season. We are initiating a recovery process in collaboration with them to ensure they return to action safely,” Stavropoulos stated.

The upcoming European Championship is set to take place from August 27 to September 14, with the 2017 champions placed in Group D alongside France, Belgium, Israel, Iceland, and host Poland.
