New Legal Solutions Must Demonstrate At Least Minimal Accountability for Firefighters

The European Progress Party (SEP) has urged the authorities to demonstrate “at least minimal responsibility” towards the firefighters who “risked their lives to defend this country” through new legislative measures.
“While fires engulfed Podgorica and its surroundings, courageous individuals stood on the front line. They did not consider the hours or fatigue, nor whether they would be compensated for their efforts. Their sole focus was on safeguarding the lives and property of their fellow citizens. Their dedication is invaluable. We extend our gratitude to all firefighters in Montenegro, as well as our colleagues from Austria, Switzerland, and neighboring countries who provided assistance with helicopters and canards,” stated the SEP.
Their united efforts exemplified what genuine assistance looks like during the most challenging times.
“Nonetheless, we cannot overlook the reality: 16 seasonal firefighters are still awaiting a resolution, even after standing shoulder to shoulder with permanent staff to protect Podgorica and its surroundings; every firefighter has accumulated over 60 hours of overtime, yet only 32 hours of pay have been promised; while over 20 homes were destroyed, hangars vanished, firefighters sustained injuries, and one life was lost, certain officials were preoccupied with painting, resting, and sleeping, while others anticipated credit for unearned accolades,” they added.
SEP also highlighted that the budget for the Capital City totals 159 million euros.
“There is no reasonable justification for failing to allocate funds for the permanent hiring of seasonal firefighters, proper compensation for every hour of overtime, the procurement of new vehicles and specialized equipment for combating forest fires, as well as necessary uniforms and protective gear that are presently lacking.”
They furthermore called on the authorities to promptly initiate the drafting of the Firefighting Law, which would grant firefighters official status, in addition to making amendments to the Protection and Rescue Law, as the “existing legal framework does not adequately address the actual needs and hazards associated with the profession.”
“It is time to cease political maneuvering and to exhibit minimal responsibility towards those who literally safeguarded this nation with their lives. Anything less would be another injustice,” the statement concluded.
