Tivat Airport Sees 25% Increase in Traffic Over Last Year in Just Five Months

Tivat Airport recorded a total of 129,174 passengers in May, marking a 21.9% increase compared to the same month last year. Last month also saw 1,367 takeoff and landing operations on the runway adjacent to Tivat Bay, reflecting a 9.7% improvement over May 2024. Throughout the first five months of this year, the terminal welcomed 260,580 passengers, a 20.4% increase from the 216,453 passengers during the same period last year. From January to the end of May, there were 2,728 aircraft operations.

Despite significantly limited and largely outdated capacities, especially in Terminal 1, and the near-catastrophic condition of road access to the airport due to ongoing construction on the boulevard from Jaz to Tivat, Tivat Airport achieved remarkable results.

However, the anticipated surge in business and traffic at Tivat Airport—on track to exceed the record figures of 2019—faced a substantial setback due to the recent conflict between Israel and Iran, which resulted in the suspension of all flights from Tel Aviv Airport. For the past two months, three Israeli airlines had been operating daily flights to Tivat.

“In light of the ongoing war in the Middle East, three Israeli airlines: ‘El Al Israel’, ‘Israir’, and ‘Arkia’, have notified Aerodromi Crne Gore about their temporary suspension of operations to this part of Europe, including flights to Tivat Airport. These airlines had been conducting approximately 30 rotations per week on the Tel Aviv-Tivat route this summer,” stated the management of Aerodromi Crne Gore.

The temporary halt in air traffic with Israel and the loss of 30 weekly flights represent a significant setback for Tivat Airport and the entire Montenegrin tourism industry, which had previously seen a marked increase in Israeli visitors this year.

The Airport of Montenegro has announced that “within its jurisdiction, it will facilitate the potential implementation of evacuation flights by Israeli airlines and will provide space for some of their fleet to land, depending on availability.”

Most of Israel’s commercial aircraft have been evacuated from Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv and relocated to temporary facilities in Cyprus, Greece, and the United States over the past two days.
