Despite missing six key players who contributed to last year’s European Championship bronze medal, including three starters and one substitute, the Montenegrin handball team secured 26th place at the 7th World Championship.

This achievement is significant for the squad, especially as they faced challenges in the main round without their top goalkeeper from the initial phase, Marta Batinović, sidelined due to a serious injury. Their farewell match saw them triumph over the Czech Republic with a score of 28:24.

“The best part is that we concluded the tournament this way without any further injuries, which is crucial for this generation. Today’s match illustrated that the girls are prepared, even under tough conditions, during early hours, allowing everyone to experience the World Championship. I am very pleased; everything unfolded as it should,” stated Bojana Popović.

The coach noted it’s premature to evaluate the team’s performance in the championship held in northern Europe, but she expressed satisfaction with their results.

“It’s essential that the team improved its gameplay throughout the tournament, showing resilience in challenging matches where outcomes were uncertain until the last moments. The girls exerted their utmost effort, deserving recognition and pride from all—whether from us at headquarters, the Federation, or all of Montenegro. They earned this through a commendable struggle. Some players have been heavily engaged with their clubs, some are still finding their rhythm, but they all showcased that they are the future of Montenegrin handball.”

The Lionesses will face Serbia in a qualifier for the European Championship on February 29, followed by the second leg in Montenegro three days later. This will serve as preparation for the Olympic qualifiers in April, where they will compete against Slovenia, Paraguay, and the losers of the Holland-Germany match.

“In an Olympic year, with a World Cup, European qualifiers, and Olympic qualifiers, the team will gather more frequently. This is beneficial as we build and enhance towards what is most important in April,” remarked the head coach.

During the pandemic, Montenegro hosted qualifiers for Tokyo and competed in a group with Norway and Romania. Popović advocates for the tournament to be organized once again in Podgorica.

“The key factor is determining the tournament’s location, as the host always holds an advantage. I hope that both the Association and our country can collectively strive for our shared goal of hosting the qualifiers in Montenegro. This would be immensely significant for us, reflecting the importance of our audience. I urge everyone involved to support our vision and join us in this endeavor,” concluded Bojana Popović.
