The future of Montenegro within Europe should not be compromised by a collective amnesia regarding our victims and selective politics, as stated by Jakov Milatović’s Presidential Office.
“The majority of Montenegro is eager to evolve into a responsible European state. Citizens anticipate a strong commitment to reforms that will facilitate the completion of negotiation chapters and aim towards a definitive goal—joining the European Union by 2028,” the President’s Office communicated in a press release.
It is important to highlight that while the state acknowledges its responsibility for the detainees at Morinje, the ultimate accountability lies with the regime of the time, which now appears to feign innocence.
“Moreover, we would be concerned if the discussions regarding reparations for the Morinj camp detainees were to transform into reparations tied to the Resolution on Jasenovac.
If Montenegro genuinely redirects its attention to EU integration and reforms, it must also acknowledge its responsibility towards citizens who have endured suffering and injustice, including detainees from the Lora camp and their families,” the statement emphasized.
Thus, it is crucial for Montenegro, while addressing unresolved issues with Croatia or any other nation, to prioritize the interests of its citizens and uphold its dedication to essential reforms, the President’s Office concluded.
