Mirza Krnić, a councilor from the Preokret movement in the Capital City Assembly, has called for an urgent meeting to discuss the issue of burning tires in Podgorica, as announced today by the movement.

According to their statement, he has sent a letter to the President of the Capital City Assembly, Jelena Borovinić Bojović.

“Dear Mrs. Borovinić Bojović, President of the Capital City Assembly, I am reaching out as a councilor to propose an urgent meeting with representatives from the relevant inspection services, the executive authorities of the Capital City, and other key stakeholders due to the alarming frequency of tire burning at multiple sites in Podgorica. This disturbing trend highlights a serious and escalating issue in waste management, particularly concerning the lack of adherence to regulations about the extended responsibility of producers and distributors for waste tires post-use. As you are aware, this not only has dire long-term health and environmental repercussions for Podgorica but for all of Montenegro. Therefore, the act of burning tires not only jeopardizes public health and environmental quality but also indicates a clear lack of coordination and effectiveness from local and state authorities,” Krnić stated in his letter.

He emphasized that it is crucial for city services and relevant authorities to take responsibility and enforce the law promptly, conduct inspections, file reports, and cease their continuous claims of incompetence regarding this issue.

“It is essential to unite all relevant parties, including administrative bodies, utility services, inspection agencies, and state representatives, to identify the root causes, gaps in accountability, and propose concrete and swift solutions—this is of utmost importance for urgent action. Support from all socio-political entities is necessary to aid this process with their influence and energy. I also propose that the Capital City Assembly formally request the Government of Montenegro to urgently engage and respond from the relevant state institutions, particularly inspection bodies, to address this harmful and dangerous practice,” Krnić communicated in his letter to Borovinić Bojović.
