Kotor’s UNESCO Status Should Not Be Subject to a Referendum
The Kotor board of the Europe Now Movement firmly and clearly rejects the proposal to hold a referendum in the Bay of Kotor regarding Kotor’s status on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as announced by the Kotor PES.
“Kotor’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site embodies undeniable cultural and civilizational significance on a global scale, which cannot be questioned by anyone—be it politically or communally,” the statement asserts.
They emphasize that addressing the developmental and infrastructural challenges of Kotor and the Bay of Kotor is crucial and warrants serious consideration; however, solutions must prioritize the preservation of cultural and historical heritage.
“Sustainable development must never serve as a rationale for undermining the values that shape our identity in the global context. The Europe Now movement is dedicated to a policy of responsible development, which seeks to harmonize the needs of contemporary life with the safeguarding of heritage for current and future generations,” the statement concludes.
