Nikšićanka Jelena Pavlović started to see her dreams materialize after graduating from the Police Academy. However, her journey took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with cancer.
“Following the Academy, I worked for several years. In late 2023, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer, leading to surgery in January of last year at the Academy of Gynecology and Obstetrics in Belgrade, where they had to remove everything from my uterus, ovaries, to lymph nodes,” shares the thirty-two-year-old Pavlović.
This was followed by radiation treatment, and after six or seven months, she began to accept her new reality, especially bolstered by positive results after chemotherapy.
“In May, an MRI revealed that the disease had returned, now in a challenging location between my kidney and spine, impairing my kidney function,” explains Pavlović, who currently lives with her parents in Bar.
Her situation has become dire, and she often finds herself in the hospital at the Clinical Center.
“I am feeling very unwell now, often relying on trodon, tranquilizers, and sleeping pills. I wouldn’t wish this experience on anyone,” she states.
The initial surgery in Belgrade was made possible through the kindness of others and the humanost.com platform.
“I need bone protection in Turkey, as well as targeted therapy that isn’t available here at the Institute of Oncology. This treatment is crucial to prevent the disease from recurring. It costs €28,000, and so far we’ve raised €7,000. I hope to travel to Turkey after completing my chemotherapy, with my second session coming up this Friday,” she adds.
Her mother serves as her primary source of support, yet also worries her deeply.
“My mother had heart surgery, and seeing her stress causes me concern for her. I feel happiest when my parents are smiling,” she shares.
While her aspirations were once grand, they have now become modest.
“For me, a successful day is simply not being in the hospital, avoiding pain, and enjoying my coffee in peace. I ask for nothing more but dream of recovery, freedom from pain and suffering, and the ability to stand on my feet, return to work, and regain a semblance of normal life,” says Jelena.
