Buducnost Defends the Women’s Basketball Cup Title

Bijelo Polje is set to host the final tournament of the Montenegrin Cup for women’s basketball on Thursday and Friday.

The reigning champions, Buducnost Bemax, are the clear frontrunners this season.

Alongside Buducnost, the tournament will feature Podgorica, Primorje, and Trebjesa, similar to last year’s lineup.

The tournament kicks off on Thursday with a match between Trebjesa and Primorje at 1 PM, followed by Buducnost Bemax facing off against Podgorica two and a half hours later.

Trebjesa is the second finalist, having secured its spot through a strong performance in the First A Montenegrin League.

“For us, as a young team composed entirely of cadets and juniors, reaching the final tournament of the Cup is a significant achievement. We may not be a threat to others, but we aim to leave a positive impression in the semi-finals,” remarked Nikšić team coach, Lidija Krstajić.

When discussing their semi-final opponent, she noted that Primorje boasts an exceptionally young and talented roster.

“We have bested them twice this season, but the Cup presents unique challenges. If we adhere to our strategy, I am hopeful for a positive outcome. Buducnost is the clear favorite, having not lost even in the WABA League. If we reach the final, we intend to approach that match with more experience and confidence,” added Krstajić.

Two years ago, Primorje’s Cup run was halted, and last year they exited the semifinals at the hands of Buducnost. This year, they are optimistic about their chances of reaching the final.

Coach Dragan Prga highlighted Primorje’s ongoing tradition of participating in the Cup’s final tournament.

“We are up against Trebjesa, who has defeated us twice. However, we will put forth our best effort, seeking to showcase new young talents who we hope will shape the future of Montenegrin basketball. Our goal is not to threaten but to put up a strong fight, and if we find a chance for victory, great; if not, we’re still thrilled,” stated Prga.

Buducnost Bemax will face Podgorica in the semi-finals, who secured their place in the final four of the WABA 2 league the night before.

“Buducnost is always a strong favorite when it comes to domestic titles. We must approach every match with full seriousness. This Cup comes at an opportune moment for us, especially following the national team break, presenting a chance to get into rhythm for the conclusion of the WABA League,” commented coach Petar Stojanović.

Reflecting on the semi-finals, he remarked that Buducnost anticipates a challenge from their affiliate, Podgorica.

“They’re a young and talented squad boasting several national team players, making it an interesting matchup. However, we are undeniably the favorites,” concluded Stojanović.

The Podgorica representative was unable to attend the press conference, as they are currently in Bosnia and Herzegovina for WABA Second League matches.
