The Battle of Košćele: A Beacon of Hope for Enslaved Europe

Today, the SOBNOR delegation from Montenegro, led by President Radojica Radojević, alongside the OBNOR-1941-1945 representatives from the Capital City Podgorica, Cetinje, and Kotor, commemorated the 84th anniversary of the renowned battle of the July 15 Uprising. They laid flowers at the Memorial Plaque in Košćele, as announced by the organization.

“Once again, we gather in Košćele, where on July 15, 1941, a group of guerrillas from the Ljubotinje and Ceklin regions, led by Captain Jakov Kusovac and political leader of the KPJ, Milo Lubarda, successfully halted the advance of the motorized Italian battalion from the Messina division, consisting of over 800 soldiers, moving towards Cetinje from Rijeka Crnojevića. It was here that they awaited the enemy and delivered a significant defeat to the fascists in occupied Europe at that time,” emphasized Veselin Rudović, the president of OBNOR 1941 – 1945 Cetinje, in his address to the attendees.

SOBNOR President Radojica Radojević remarked that this site witnessed a small group of insurgents deal a staggering blow to the occupier.

“The uprising and its numerous battles were monumental, and particularly the battle at Košćele stands as a true beacon that illuminated the darkened Europe of the past. By commemorating this significant date at this proud location, we assertively highlight our commitment against the humbling and rewriting of our homeland’s war history, the heroic events, individuals, and anti-fascist accomplishments. We will resist any attacks and desecration of monuments dedicated to the fighters and anti-fascists who championed freedom and peace, embedding themselves in the annals of the global anti-fascist struggle. In this light, we firmly voice our disagreement with any groups and individuals who romanticize a return to revanchism and fascism. Glory to the heroes and liberators of the July 13 uprising and to the valiant fighters who contributed to this freedom-loving region. Their memory deserves honor, while their esteemed families and kin can rightfully take pride in their legacy,” he stated.
