“Strong Start from the First Minute, Just Like Against Croatia”

On paper, Montenegro might face a less challenging opponent than Croatia; however, Greece has proven to be one of the most difficult rivals for the Montenegrin water polo players in recent years.

This Tuesday marks the quarter-finals at the World Championship in Fukuoka, where the “sharks” will go up against “Helen” at 8 PM our time. They aim not only to chase their dream of medals but also to seek revenge for painful defeats in their last two encounters at major tournaments.

Two years ago, Greece defeated Montenegro 10:4 in the Olympic quarter-finals in Tokyo, and last summer they faced off again at the European Championship in Split, in a playoff for 5th to 8th place, with a score of 14:12 against Montenegro.

“This is a very serious team; let’s not forget that the Greeks are the current Olympic vice-champions. They have exceptional individual players as well as impressive young talent,” stated Dušan Matković from Fukoka.

What advantages does Montenegro have?

“We need to start the match with the best possible swimming, imposing our rhythm and fast-paced game. If we can achieve that, we will stand a good chance of victory,” Matković added.

Montenegro demonstrated in the round of 16 against Croatia that they can compete with any team globally. Matković noted that match as a highlight, filled with remarkable goals.

“The game against Croatia was an emotional rollercoaster. I’m proud of the team, especially for the unwavering belief in victory, which was at an extraordinary level. We ended our streak of tough defeats, and I hope this will propel us into the upcoming matches with renewed strength,” Matković remarked.

Vlado Popadić thinks that Greece may be a somewhat easier opponent than Croatia.

“This match could serve as a turning point. If we secure a win, we will advance in the quest for medals, proving to ourselves that we can consistently compete at the highest level, and showing other teams that they must take us seriously,” Popadić expressed.

However, our water polo player anticipates a challenging match against Greece.

“They are missing their key player, Angelos Vlahopoulos, which could provide some relief. Nonetheless, I emphasize that it won’t be an easy match; much like against Croatia, we plan to come out strong from the very first minute,” Popadić asserted.
