“LaMelo: The New Star Outshining LeBron and Luka”
The Charlotte basketball team triumphed over the Los Angeles Lakers with a score of 100:97 (21:28, 16:20, 32:18, 31:31) during an away game, thus breaking a three-game losing streak in the NBA.
This match marked the continuation of NBA action following a five-day hiatus for the All-Star weekend.
Miles Bridges was the standout performer for Charlotte, contributing 29 points, six rebounds, and five steals. LaMelo Ball supported the effort with 27 points, six assists, and five rebounds. Nick Smith Jr. added 12 points, while Bosnian center Jusuf Nurkić recorded eight rebounds, seven assists, two blocks, and a steal in 18 minutes on the court. Nurkić joined Charlotte from Phoenix through a trade that also brought Serbian international Vasilije Micić to the team.
LeBron James was the leading scorer for the Lakers, finishing with 26 points, 11 assists, and seven rebounds. Rui Hachimura contributed 17 points and eight rebounds, while Luka Dončić achieved a near triple-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists. Dorian Finney-Smith added 12 points to the scoreline. Austin Reeves was ejected in the third quarter after receiving two quick technical fouls for aggressively disputing a referee’s decision.
The Lakers had a chance to equalize in the final six seconds. James missed his first three-point attempt following a layup by Dončić. Gabe Vincent grabbed the offensive rebound, but James missed another three-pointer after receiving a pass, failing to tie the game with just one second remaining.
This was the first matchup between the two teams since the Lakers opted out of a trade that would have sent Charlotte center Mark Williams to Los Angeles in exchange for Dalton Necht and Cam Reddish. Williams posted 10 points and nine rebounds for Charlotte, while Necht added three points and five rebounds for the Lakers. Reddish did not play in this game.
With this victory, Charlotte secured its second win in the last 11 games, currently sitting in 14th place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 14 wins and 39 losses. Conversely, the Lakers faced their second consecutive loss after a streak of six wins, now holding the fifth position in the Western Conference with 32 wins and 21 losses.
