“The Iconic Montenegrin Goalkeeper Joins the Coaching Staff of the Spanish National Team”

Miloš Šćepanović, the renowned Montenegrin water polo goalkeeper and European champion from Malaga in 2008, is taking on a new role in his coaching career.

Formerly Vladimir Gojković’s assistant with the “Sharks”, the coach of Marseille has now joined the coaching staff of the Spanish national team and will be collaborating with David Martin.

“We made our initial contact in early September, then needed to organize the structures within the Water Polo Association, which is standard procedure after the Olympic Games, along with renewing the contract with coach David Martin for the next cycle. Once that was completed, we engaged in final discussions and reached an agreement last month,” Šćepanović shared.

The well-known Šćepo has already begun working with the Spanish national team as they gear up for the World Cup qualifying tournament in Romania.

“We concluded the first phase of our preparations in Majorca towards the end of the year, and now we’re in Barcelona for the second phase before the tournament in Romania,” Šćepanović explained further:

“My focus is on game analysis and development, enhancing specific technical skills in individual player training, particularly with goalkeepers. I had similar responsibilities with our national team,” Šćepanović concluded.

The aim is for him to remain with the Spanish team throughout the Olympic cycle, leading up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“The degree to which our relationship evolves will depend on how things progress with more intensive and comprehensive work, as well as how integration occurs within the coaching staff and with the players… It’s certainly a challenge for me that I do not speak Spanish, but I am actively working on it,” Šćepanović added.

Spain is the current European champion and will compete in the World Cup qualifiers (January 6 – 12), where Montenegro will also be participating, sharing a group with France and Hungary.
