The Montenegrin boxing team has achieved a notable performance at the EUBC Junior European Championship in Novi Pazar, securing two bronze medals with three boxers participating.

Bronze accolades were earned by Strahinja Mrdak in the up to 50 kg division, and Nikola Raičević from Nikšić in the up to 48 kg division.

Mrdak, representing BK Budva, faced a setback in his journey to the finals as he was halted by Armenian boxer Tigran Kiragosyan, a decision that sparked significant discontent within the Montenegrin camp.

In contrast, Raičević could not make it to the semi-finals due to a neck injury he sustained in the quarter-finals. Despite the dedicated efforts of the medical team, he was unable to compete against Russian Matvey Zaitsev.

This meant that Raičević had to accept the bronze.

“Our emotions are mixed. While we feel pride for the two European bronze medals earned, it is bittersweet since we are aware that we could have reached the finals. Nevertheless, I am proud of both of our athletes. They gave their all in the ring and displayed exceptional quality, character, and sportsmanship,” said coach Slavko Mrdak.

“We disagree with the judges’ decision that favored the Armenian boxer. Strahinja certainly deserved a spot in the finals, but the nature of sport can be harsh. While we acknowledge that judging is part of the sport, we feel a sense of unfairness as we believe Strahinja was wronged. It’s also unfortunate that Raičević’s injury prevented him from fighting for a final position. This is undoubtedly a challenging moment for any athlete, yet the health of our boxers remains our top priority. However, the two bronze medals at the European Championships symbolize a significant achievement for Montenegro and indicate we are on the right track,” Mrdak added.
