In Nikšić, one out of every five employees is engaged in the wholesale and retail trade, as well as in the repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles.

This statistic is drawn from the 2023 census conducted by Monstat in Montenegro.

Nationally, 19.3 percent of the workforce is employed in the same sectors. This holds true for the majority of workers in ten municipalities, including not only Nikšić but also Podgorica, Bar, Herceg Novi, Bijelo Polje, Budva, Zeta, Ulcinj, Kotor, and Danilovgrad.

Among Nikšić’s 65,705 residents, 24,739 individuals, or 37.65 percent, are employed.

Breaking it down by sector, only 2.4 percent of Nikšić’s workforce is in agriculture, forestry, and fishing. Additionally, 0.65 percent work in mining and quarrying, while 3.36 percent are involved in the supply of electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning. The education sector employs 9.38 percent of the city’s residents, with 6.15 percent in health and social protection, and 7.9 percent in state administration, defense, and mandatory social insurance. Furthermore, 3.35 percent are in professional, scientific, and technical activities, with 2.3 percent working in information and communication.

As for occupational categories, nearly one-quarter of Nikšić’s employed residents (6,039 or 24.4 percent) belong to the group of occupations in services and trade, while one in five workers (5,365 or 21.69 percent) is classified as an expert or artist.

Only 1.96 percent of employed individuals in Nikšić are in agriculture, forestry, and fishing, and merely 1.22 percent are employed in military occupations.

In the category of Professional Associates and Technicians, 12.7 percent are employed, while 10.2 percent work in Crafts and Related Occupations, and nearly ten percent are engaged as Plant and Machine Operators, Assemblers, and Drivers. The management group, which includes Directors and Legislators, counts 972 employees, or 3.9 percent.

At the national level, a similar trend is observed. The largest proportion of employees works in services and trade (23.1 percent) and expertise (22.8 percent), while only 2.1 percent are engaged in agriculture, forestry, and fishing.
