The journey that began with triumph in 2012 has reached its conclusion – Jelena Radivojević (formerly Despotović) has bid farewell to the Montenegrin women’s handball team.
According to the Handball Association of Montenegro, the left back has informed president Petar Kapisoda and the national coaching staff of her decision to retire from the national team, which she has represented with distinction since 2012, making her debut at the European Championship where the “lionesses” clinched the gold medal.
“Another remarkable player who has greatly contributed to the many achievements of the ‘lionesses’ has decided to retire from international play. Over the past 13 years, Radivojević has participated in the Tokyo Olympic Games, as well as five European Championships and five World Championships. Acknowledged for her vital role in both attack and defense, she has been a key asset at numerous major events,” the RSCG stated.
Recently, following the European Championship in December, two additional players who led the “lionesses” to European glory in Belgrade in 2012, Milena Raičević and Marina Rajčić, also announced their retirements from the Montenegrin national team.
Jelena Radivojević last donned the national emblem in April last year during the Olympic qualifying tournament for Paris.
“I experienced countless unforgettable moments while wearing the national jersey. Whether celebrating the highest achievements or facing setbacks, I wore the national emblem proudly. Every match was special, and the memories from my time with the team and coaches will always be cherished. However, after nearly 13 years, starting with that championship where Montenegro claimed the European title, I’ve made a decision that was far from easy,” Jelena reflected.
She further shared that balancing family commitments with club and national duties has been challenging.
“I hope my teammates and the entire handball community will understand the reasons behind my decision to step away from the national team. It’s time for me to focus on my family, and I am grateful for everything I experienced in the national jersey. I look forward to cheering on the new generations of ‘lionesses’ from the stands, confident that they will continue to keep Montenegro prominent on the handball map,” Radivojević remarked.
The RSCG conveyed its heartfelt gratitude to Jelena Radivojević for her unwavering commitment, spirit, and passion while representing our nation.
