In the 2023/24 season, Adriatic water polo players will find a new venue for their Champions League matches.

The team from Herceg Novi will host their games in Trebinje, as they currently lack a suitable winter pool to compete at an elite European level in their own city.

A press conference was held to mark Jadran’s relocation to Trebinje, attended by officials from the Municipality of Herceg Novi, the city of Trebinje, Hydroelectric Power Plant on Trebišnjica, and PVK Jadran.

“Due to the current circumstances, Jadran does not have an indoor pool that meets the requirements for this level of competition. Our first Champions League matches will take place at the indoor pool in Trebinje this October. This arrangement will not only aid our club, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, but will also promote water sports in Trebinje and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It’s vital for such sports to flourish here, as nearby cities have produced major water polo teams like Jadran, Primorje, and Jug. Thus, it’s only logical for Trebinje to emerge as a future hub for water polo and swimming,” expressed Jadran President Boro Lucic.

Jadran is placed in Group C of the Champions League alongside Ferencvaros, Jadran from Split, and the winner of qualifying Group A.

They will make their debut in Trebinje on October 7, hosting their namesake from Split.

“I hope this will establish Trebinje as a notable water polo city in the future, and I look forward to our continued sports collaboration for mutual benefit. The water polo club Jadran, representing not only Herceg Novi but also Montenegro, will significantly enhance the quality of water polo in Trebinje, solidifying its reputation as a water polo center. We are currently developing a project for a new Olympic pool in Herceg Novi that will be comparable in size to Trebinje’s pool,” stated Stevan Katić, the President of the Municipality of Herceg Novi.
