Gusty Winds Cause Chaos in Podgorica and Along the Coast; Major Blaze in Zagorič Leads to 20 Firefighter Responses – News Update

Strong stormy winds have caused issues in the central and coastal areas of Montenegro over the last two days. Trees were uprooted in August, affecting a bridge in the heart of Podgorica, while a section of a building’s facade fell. Additionally, a powerful gust from the Kotor pool resulted in a roof being blown off.

In the past 24 hours, the Podgorica protection and rescue service has conducted approximately 20 interventions in the field.

– At least three trees have been reported down in the last 24 hours. We swiftly collaborated with cleanliness and greenery colleagues for removal. A facade fell in the downtown area. Fortunately, the damage was limited to material losses, and no injuries were reported. We urge citizens to avoid going outside until Wednesday when we expect the situation to stabilize. This warning is particularly important for the elderly, stated Rina Zdravko Blečić, Commander of the Podgorica Protection and Rescue Service.

During such adverse weather conditions, Blečić emphasized that the team is fully mobilized and all personnel are required to respond as needed. He noted that strong winds can also exacerbate chimney fires, leading to dangers for residential buildings.

– We have received numerous reports of minor fires, but this morning we conducted a major intervention when a house roof in Zagorič caught fire. We arrived at the scene during the early stages of the fire, which was rapidly spreading due to the wind. Our team of 12 firefighters and five vehicles successfully contained the blaze. While significant material damage occurred, thankfully, there were no injuries, Blečić said.

In northern Montenegro, rescuers helped 14 individuals who were trapped in snowdrifts yesterday. Draga Popović, the commander of the Protection and Rescue Service in Žabljak, stated that the situation is now under control.

– We did not have any rescue interventions today. The roads are passable and everything is functioning smoothly. The ski resort is also operating normally, Popović added.
