The European Championship taking place in Netanya from January 3 to 16 next year presents a significant opportunity for the Montenegrin water polo team to secure a place at the Olympic Games, according to coach Vladimir Gojković.
In the European Championship in Israel, Montenegro is set to compete in Group A of Division A alongside teams from Spain, France, and Croatia.
The title of European Champion will grant direct qualification for the Olympic Games in Paris. Should Hungary, Greece, or France—who already possess an Olympic spot—secure the title, the next highest-ranked team will earn a place in the Olympics.
“This system is being implemented for the first time, leaving limited opportunities. We drew an easier opponent from the third hat, as France is slightly weaker than Greece. It’s a very strong group, and we are up against stronger teams. We will strive to find our opportunities. Our aim is to compete at the European Championship and secure an Olympic visa,” Gojković remarked following the draw.
Prior to the draw, teams were categorized into two divisions based on their performance in the last championship and qualifiers.
The top eight teams formed Division 1, while the remaining eight were placed in Division 2. Teams from both divisions were then allocated into two groups of four.
The two best teams from each Division 1 group will proceed to the quarterfinals, while the third and fourth-placed teams will face the top two from the Division 2 groups in the round of 16.
The group in which Montenegro participates in the round of 16 will clash with the teams from Group A of Division B, including Serbia, Germany, Israel, and Malta.
