Greece’s Initial Challenge for Savić and Montenegro

Today marks the Montenegrin water polo team’s first match since the Olympic Games held in Paris.

This match signifies a fresh start, as Dejan Savić has taken over from Vladimir Gojković as head coach, debuting in the upcoming match against Greece as the qualification tournament for the World Cup kicks off.

The contest between the “Sharks” and Helena in Bucharest is set to begin at 15:30 p.m.

The water polo players gathered on December 23, and just a week later, Savić revealed the roster of 18 players he selected to compete in Romania.

“While there has been little time to prepare, that should not serve as an excuse… We have a new coach, and in many ways, a new team. Our focus should be on minimizing mistakes and establishing a solid foundation, whether we have a larger or smaller roster. My primary focus is on our defensive assignments,” stated Savić. The Montenegrin team is also preparing for a match against Serbia scheduled for Wednesday at 17:30 p.m.

This tournament does not hold significant implications for our team, as Montenegro has already secured hosting rights for the Superfinal in April, which guarantees direct advancement to the final.

“Indeed, this tournament is not crucial for results, but it is vital for our integration as a team,” said Savić.

The challenges ahead are formidable.

“Greece will come in almost at full strength, albeit without Angelos Vlahopoulos, but it will certainly pose a significant challenge. Meanwhile, Serbia will field a rejuvenated squad, which is essential since most of those players are of similar age to the candidates in Montenegro’s A selection,” concluded Savić.
