Proposal to Include Amendments to the Voters’ Register Law in the Agenda for the May 29th Session

Democratic MP Momčilo Leković has announced that he, along with fellow members of the parliamentary majority, has proposed adding the Bill on Amendments to the Law on the Voters’ Register to the agenda for the session on May 29.

“This legislative initiative aims to tackle one of the most pressing issues within our electoral framework—the emergence of fictitious registrations just before local elections, intended to manipulate the voting intentions of citizens. The proposed measure clarifies that only voters who have maintained their residency in Šavnik from the cutoff date of the voter list until election day will be eligible to vote in the repeat elections,” stated Leković.

He underscored the significant importance of this law for the citizens of Šavnik, who have been “held captive by an incomplete election process” for over two and a half years.

“Despite their legal rights and constitutionally guaranteed ability to elect representatives, the citizens of Šavnik have been effectively deprived of this right due to abuses that led to the suspension of elections at two polling stations. They have shown great patience and dignity, yet they remain without a legitimate local government. Such a situation is intolerable in a democratic society,” Leković asserted.

He emphasized that it is the parliament’s duty to ensure that the citizens of Šavnik receive what is rightfully theirs—the ability to freely and legally elect their representatives.

“Thus, this Bill is not merely a technical legal adjustment; it represents an institutional commitment to the citizens who have waited too long for justice and equality under the law. I urge all parliamentary factions to support this bill and demonstrate that free elections, the rule of law, and respect for citizen voices form the bedrock of our collective political endeavors,” the statement concluded.
