A tragic loss for Montenegrin water polo – the esteemed coach Petar Porobić has passed away unexpectedly at the age of 67.
Throughout his coaching career, he achieved monumental success, leading Montenegro to its first gold medal at the 2008 European Championship in Malaga. Recently, he was coaching the team from China.
In 2005, he also celebrated victory as world champion with the national team of Serbia and Montenegro.
His playing career was with the club Primorac from his native Kotor, where he began his illustrious coaching journey that spanned four decades.
Porobić joined the coaching staff of Yugoslavia in 1985 under selector Ratko Rudić, and post the breakup of the former state, he served as an assistant coach for Nenad Manojlović in the national teams of FR Yugoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro.
Once independence was restored, he took on the role of coach for Montenegro, making history at his very first major competition in Malaga.
In club water polo, alongside Primorac, he also managed Bečej, Russian Sturm, and Jadran from Herceg Novi. His impact was significant, notably leading the Škver club to the Champions League final.
Following his tenure in China, he had plans to return to Kotor and Primorac.
Today, the world of Montenegrin water polo mourns the loss of a true legend.
