Montenegro can only be preserved and developed through the principles of anti-fascism, secularism, and civil society, as emphasized today by Vatroslav Belan, the president of the Liberal Party and a key figure in the European Alliance.

His remarks came in response to a statement from Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović earlier today, in which Milatović said, “We must preserve and develop Montenegro based on the values of unity and democracy.”

“‘To the values of togetherness.’ Sounds beautiful and celebratory, yet it resonates with the hollow emptiness of the ‘good morning to all sides’ policy. Who are we gathering around: the criminal Pavle Đurišić or the hero Ljubo Čupić? Are we uniting under the values of May 21, 2006, or the Podgorica Assembly of 1918 and the vision that Momir Bulatović had for Montenegro? I support Montenegro’s EU membership, while President Milatović is fostering ‘values of togetherness’ in Podgorica with Vladislav Dajković, who believes Montenegro has no future in the EU and suggests BRICS as a preferable alternative. Are we rallying behind the flag of Montenegro or that of Russia? Did he consult his partners from the DNP?” wrote Belan on social media platform Iks.

He further noted, “Hitler’s Germany established its ‘community values’ on Nazism, which was indeed unifying.”

“Thus, Montenegro’s preservation and development can only stem from anti-fascism, secularism, and civil society, and it can be shaped only by those who truly love and respect it, firmly opposing all attempts to distort history and rehabilitate Chetnik ideology. The president must explicitly call for gathering around these values today—if he is permitted to do so,” stated Belan.
