A Hamburger SV supporter sustained “life-threatening injuries” during the celebration for the team’s return to the Bundesliga, while 19 other fans were seriously hurt.

The Hamburg fire department initiated a “major emergency response” to manage the crowds of fans who flooded the pitch on Saturday to celebrate their club’s return to the Bundesliga following a victory over Ulm.

Medical assistance was provided to 44 supporters of the German club, with 25 of them requiring transfer to local hospitals, including five with only minor injuries.

Hamburger SV, a club with a history of six German championships, will be returning to the Bundesliga for the first time since the 2017/18 season.
