The legendary Montenegrin and Yugoslav water polo player, now a Hall of Fame member, is taking on new challenges and will also be a participant in the upcoming European Championship.

Mirko Vičević has been appointed as the new coach of Slovenia, as announced by the country’s federation.

This Olympic and world champion from his playing days with Yugoslavia has previously coached teams like Kataro, Montenegro’s youth selections, and Crvena zvezda. He succeeds Kristof Štromayer, who stepped down due to health issues.

As reported by Slovenian media, Vičević will lead the national team at least through the European Championship scheduled to take place in Zagreb and Dubrovnik in January.

Slovenia’s group matches will be held in Dalmatia, facing rivals Slovakia, the Netherlands, and Romania. To progress to the playoffs and knockout stage from Division 2, the team needs to finish in one of the top two positions in the standings.

Meanwhile, Montenegro will also compete in group stage matches in Dubrovnik, where they will go up against France, Spain, and the host country, Croatia.
