Media workers in Montenegro are facing an alarming rise in online threats, making journalists increasingly vulnerable even in their personal lives, according to the Media Union (SMCG).

SMCG expressed deep concern regarding a threatening message directed at Television E journalist Itana Kaluđerović through her Facebook account.

“As we have consistently highlighted, online threats have regrettably become commonplace, leaving journalists exposed even in private settings such as social media,” the statement reads.

They also highlighted the national significance of this event, noting that the threatening comment was made under a photo of Kaluđerović wearing a Montenegrin shirt, taken in Cetinje.

“This situation further fuels hatred and division, posing a significant risk to social peace,” SMCG stated.

They urged relevant authorities to swiftly identify and hold accountable the individual responsible for the threat, stressing that online spaces are not exempt from legal scrutiny and that anonymity should not shield threats, hate speech, or violence.

“This marks the ninth incident recorded by SMCG in our database concerning attacks on journalists and the fourth documented in the online sphere,” the announcement noted.

SMCG encouraged media professionals to report every incident to help paint a clearer picture of the issue’s extent and to exert pressure on institutions for action.
