The Railway Transport of Montenegro (ŽPCG) initiated a new passenger fare structure at the start of June, eliminating the promotional ticket prices, which has resulted in some ticket costs doubling. For instance, the fare from Podgorica to Nikšić has risen from €1.50 to €3.20, while travel from the Capital to Bijelo Polje now costs €5.20 instead of the previous €3.50; the ticket from Podgorica to Bar is now €0.50 more expensive.
In an official statement to “Vijesti,” ŽPCG clarified that “there has been no increase in standard transportation fares, only the removal of promotional tickets, and that the prices are actually lower than they were in 2008.” The state-run company had offered these promotional rates for nearly a decade.
“Until June 1, 2025, the previously adopted Passenger Tariff from 2008 was in effect. With the new tariff, regular fares are lower than those in 2008, and the promotional ticket prices have been discontinued. Consequently, there hasn’t been a price increase; rather, there’s been a decrease in regular fares,” ŽPCG stressed.
This newspaper also visited the Podgorica train station platform yesterday to gather passenger opinions regarding the fare changes, and they reported that the ticket prices were still considered low.
According to data provided by ŽPCG, the current fare from Podgorica to Bar is €2.80, which remains €0.20 cheaper than the €3.00 fare from 2008. The cost of transport from Podgorica to Nikšić is also €0.20 less than it was 17 years ago, when it was priced at €3.40. The fare for the route from the capital to Bijelo Polje is now €1.20 cheaper compared to 2008, when it cost €6.40.
The ŽPCG website notes that tickets purchased from conductors at stations with ticket offices (Bar, Sutomore, Podgorica, Nikšić, and Bijelo Polje) carry an additional €1 charge.
During its meeting on May 8, the Board of Directors of ŽPCG also approved modifications to the passenger tariff for domestic travel, introducing benefits for vulnerable population segments. Specifically, individuals suffering from cancer, dystrophy, and similar conditions, multiple sclerosis, and those undergoing dialysis are entitled to free transport, while their companions pay half of the ticket price.
Moreover, students and pupils can now obtain an annual subscription ticket allowing unlimited trips from their residences to their educational institutions. This ticket costs €30 for the Podgorica – Bar and Podgorica – Nikšić routes, while for the route from the Capital to Bijelo Polje, a fee of €60 is required. Previous privileges remain in place, allowing children under six years old to travel for free.
