The Faroese Miracles Arrived Ahead of Schedule

KI Klaksvik emerged as one of the most enchanting narratives in European football this summer. Our goalkeeper, Nina Abramović, shared with “Vijesti” the remarkable sporting feats unfolding in the Faroe Islands, arriving sooner than anyone anticipated.
The Faroese handball squad orchestrated one of the most astonishing upsets in the annals of European championships, managing to secure a point against powerhouse Norway in Berlin (26:26).
Not only did they achieve this, but they did so in a dramatic fashion, having trailed 26:23 with just one minute left on the clock!
With 97 seconds remaining, the young national team captain, Elias Elefsen, and Skipagetu executed a seven-pointer, followed by Rei Berg Hansen capitalizing on Pauli Jakobsen’s defensive gap to narrow the score to 26:25 with 24 seconds on the clock.
The Norwegian coach took a time-out; however, a Skipagetu intercepted the ball from Harald Rejnkind, who attempted to grab him with both hands from behind.
The referees penalized Rejnkind, awarding a seven-pointer that a Skipagetu converted, leading to an incredible celebration in the “Mercedes Benz Arena,” where around 5,000 Faroese gathered—representing one out of every ten inhabitants of this small Atlantic archipelago!
This result keeps the Faroe Islands’ hopes alive for the main stage. If they convincingly defeat Poland and Slovenia triumphs over Norway, they will secure a spot among Europe’s top 12 teams.
Both Skipagetu and Teis Horn Rasmussen were standout performers, each scoring five goals, while 18-year-old Oli Mitun added three.
On the Norwegian side, Aleksander Blonz led with eight goals, closely followed by Goran Johansen with six.

In the opening match of Group D, Slovenia triumphed over Poland with a score of 32:25, securing their place in the main stage.
From Group E, Sweden and the Netherlands also advanced to the top 12, defeating Georgia (16:42) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (26:36) by impressive margins.
The two entrants from the newly formed Group 2 were also confirmed from Group F—Denmark clinched victory with a win over Greece (40:28), while Portugal edged past the Czech Republic (30:27).
