Students and Workers Unite in Protest in Belgrade

Under the banner “Shoulder to shoulder, students and workers,” a protest took place at Republic Square in Belgrade.

A diverse group of workers, students, and other community members assembled from various parts of the city, converging at governmental buildings related to key sectors, including the ministries of health, education, science, culture, and information, as well as the General Staff of the Serbian Army and the Constitutional Court.

Some participants made their way to New Belgrade, where a police barrier halted farmers on tractors and students from the Faculty of Agriculture, who aimed to join the demonstration at Republic Square.

The police disallowed the tractors from crossing Branko’s Bridge towards the city center, although pedestrians and motorcyclists were permitted to pass. However, students and citizens traveling from New Belgrade to Republic Square were determined to wait for the farmers, some of whom were scheduled to speak at the Square.

Students and farmers were soon joined by additional protestors arriving from Republic Square after a series of speeches by representatives from various worker sectors.

Eventually, the tractors retreated, with law enforcement following suit, allowing the two groups of demonstrators to unite at Branko’s Bridge on the New Belgrade side.

The protest concluded peacefully.

This gathering was organized by academics who are currently blocking the Belgrade Faculty of Philosophy, emphasizing it as a show of support for workers across all sectors who have demonstrated solidarity with the students.

“We recognize the selfless commitment, solidarity, and sacrifice you, the workers, are making in support of the students’ aspirations. We urge all workers and citizens to unite, with courage and dignity,” expressed the student organizers at the Faculty of Philosophy prior to the protest.
