The remarkable win against Serbia as they exited the European Championship (30:29) secured a top seed for the Montenegrin handball players in the World Championship playoffs, with Nikola Matović playing a key role.
The goalkeeper from Swedish Ama stepped in for Nebojša Simić in the 34th minute after Simić received a red card for trying to prevent a counterattack but colliding with Dragan Pešmalbek.
The sole player from Podgorica in the national squad shared his thoughts after the match.
“The match had intense energy from start to finish. It’s unfortunate that we had to lose our teammates and friends. For us, Montenegro comes first, and our love for our country shone through tonight,” remarked the 25-year-old goalkeeper.
Taking over Simić’s role wasn’t easy, especially as he observed his teammate’s defensive strategies from the stands, but Matović managed to rise to the occasion.
“Nebojša had an outstanding tournament, possibly being the best goalkeeper overall. I’m here to back up my teammates, but a twist of fate put me in the goal. As for the primary stage, outcomes could have been different, but sport is unpredictable. I’m disappointed that we didn’t advance; it was a single crucial ball, but this will help us in future matches and tournaments,” Matović reflected.
Vuk Lazović excelled in defense, halting Serbia’s advance at the start of the final minute.
“We gave our all tonight; finally, things turned in our favor after two unfortunate matches. That’s the nature of sports—let’s keep moving forward. We have the playoffs for the World Championship ahead, and we aspire to compete at the highest level again,” he stated.
Luka Radović faced challenges against Iceland when he was sent off 88 seconds early due to an incorrect substitution. He redeemed himself this time, proving that the future holds promise for the “lions.”
“This ranks among the most exhilarating feelings. Sadly, we’re heading home due to bad luck, but the tide turned in our favor tonight. I have faith that we’ll bring our A-game in the playoffs and perform even better at the World Cup,” he concluded.
