A team of cardio-anesthesiologists at the Clinical Center (KCCG) has successfully performed the percutaneous tracheotomy procedure independently for the first time, which is crucial for treating critically ill patients requiring long-term mechanical ventilation.

KCCG noted that this tracheotomy technique has been in practice for 50 years, significantly enhancing the care of such patients over extended periods.

“In contrast to the surgical method executed by ENT specialists at KCCG, percutaneous tracheotomy is a less invasive option, enabling quicker performance without the need to transfer patients to the operating room,” the statement elaborated.

The implementation of percutaneous tracheotomy allows other specialists in intensive care, including intensivists, anesthesiologists, neurologists, and infectious disease experts, to perform the procedure independently.
