Volleyball Players Claim First Point in Golden League Before Falling to Latvia in Thrilling Fifth Set

The Montenegrin women’s volleyball team celebrated its first win, while the men’s team secured their inaugural point—this summarizes today’s performance of our teams in the CEV Golden League.

Under the guidance of Ivica Jevtić, the squad faced a challenging match against the favored Latvians in their second outing in this tough competition, following a 3:0 defeat to Romania. The game, held in Mioveni, Romania, was a gripping contest that lasted two and a half hours, ending with a score of 3:2 (22:25, 25:21, 25:19, 21:25, 15:10).

Latvia started strong, jumping to a 3:1 lead; however, Montenegro quickly responded, turning the tide and controlling the game for most of the first set. The Montenegrin players reached their largest margin at 10:5. Nevertheless, the Latvians fought back, narrowing the score to a mere point at 19:18. In crucial moments, Đorđe Jovović and his teammates showcased their composure, clinching the set with their second set point for a 1:0 lead (25:22).

The second set commenced evenly but Latvia soon surged ahead, securing a 12:8 lead which they maintained throughout the remainder of the set, continuing a similar trend into the third.

The fourth set was fiercely contested. Latvia led 19:17, but Montenegro showcased their resilience by leveling the score at 19:19 and then taking the lead with three consecutive points, making it 22:19. Remaining steady in the climactic moments, they wrapped up the set (25:22), earning a guaranteed point.

In the decisive set, the young Montenegrin team struggled, especially after captain Luka Babić left the court due to injury during the third set. Latvia dominated the tie-break to win 15:10, concluding the match at 3:2 in sets.

Đorđe Jovović was the standout player, contributing 23 points, while Benjamin Hadžisalihović added 10 points, and Matija Ćinćur scored nine. For the winning team, Fejmanis Gustavs led with 15 points.

After this tournament in Romania, Ivica Jevtić’s team is set to return to Montenegro, where they will compete against the Czech Republic and Finland next weekend.
